Weekend Preview: Cards and Barracudas play Sunday in the Opening Home Games of the 2009 Season16.04.2009
The Cards play host to the Zurich Barracudas in a rematch of last seasons semi-finals. The Cardinals of course won that series, and eventually their fourth consecutive championship. The Barracudas and Challengers find themselves without a field this season, as an international quality ballpark is being constructed at the Heerenschulli. This is the reason that the Barracudas will be the home team, although the game will be played at the allmend. The Barracudas are without the services of Jeff Mottl, their number 1 pitcher, who is currently pitching in college in Canada. This leaves the question as to who will be the Swiss pitcher they rely on. It looks like it will be committee, all available arms will need to be ready. The American import, Kyle Patrick, who was drafted out of high school, and eventually played NCAA division 1 baseball, will make his official Swiss debut. The Cards bring their new look team back to Bern after winning the season opener in convincing fashion with an 11-1 win over the Lausanne Indians. Severin Fries, Raphael Hanzi, Tinu Gygax, and Angelo Rodriguez have all decided to take this year off. To fill the vacancy created by their departures, the Cards signed perennial .400 hitter Rudy Vargas, and newcomer Alex Cruz. Both players are great athletes, and should help lead a talented offensive team. Chris Beyeler has moved into the number 1 pitcher spot, followed by Tobias Imboden as the number 2. If last weeks 6 hit, 1 unearned run performance is any guide for the season, the pitching staff will also do their part to make the run for a five-peat, and history. Come join the team as we open our home season starting at 11am, Sunday 19th, at the allmend in Bern. A first pitch will be thrown by LxBxH owner, Silvano Gauch, one of the Cards main sponsors. Show your support and make this an opening day to remember.
